Most parents will never experience how difficult it can be to raise a child with autism. Society at large just doesn’t understand the challenges of controlling a kid who is easily overstimulated and prone to overreactions to normal, everyday situations. And what’s worse, is that law enforcement and our education system don’t know how to properly treat these kids.
That fact was made abundantly clear last week, when a mother filmed her 10-year-old autistic son being arrested by resource officers at his school last week. She posted the video to Facebook, and it has since gone viral. So why was her son arrested? The little boy apparently punched and kicked a teacher six months ago. (Language Warning)
After the incident the boy was expelled. His mother, Luanne Haygood, brought him back to school for the first time in months to take a state test. She was never informed that her son had a warrant out for arrest over the incident.
“I was extremely angry. That I felt like this was a power play. I felt like this was a this is what you get. You can’t do anything about it. We’re going to arrest your son if he can’t abide by the rules.” Haygood told CBS-4 in Miami. “To go and have him arrested on school grounds, in front of other students, in front of personnel, during school hours, they could have come to my house at any time and told me what was going on.”
Instead the disabled child had to be taken to jail without warning, where he stayed overnight and was only fed one meal. He is now back home living under house arrest, and awaiting a trail scheduled for next month.
