New Cali “Cyber Fraud” Bill Would Make “Fake News” (Read: Alt Media) About Politicians Against the Law

And here is how they will try to get free speech against politicians on alternative media sites shut down and abolished from the Web.

Lots of laws that start in California end up sweeping the nation…. gun laws, environmental laws, vaccination statutes, etc. The list is long.

Now California Assembly member Ed Chau (D – Monterey Park) has introduced Assembly Bill 1104, also known as “The California Political Cyberfraud Abatement Act,” which would essentially make it against the law to publish “fake news” that could potentially impact an election… any election.

The bill would amend California election code to add the following:

“It is unlawful for a person to knowingly and willingly make, publish or circulate on an Internet Web site, or cause to be made, published, or circulated in any writing posted on an Internet Web site, a false or deceptive statement designed to influence the vote on either of the following:

(a) Any issue submitted to voters at an election.

(b) Any candidate for election to public office.”

In other words, it is nothing more than yet another way to limit free speech on the web. “A deceptive statement” will be in the eye of the beholder. Any politician can simply say anything negative published about him or her is “deceptive” in his or her opinion.

See how that works?

And oh, by the way —

“Under the proposed bill, comedy shows like ‘Saturday Night Live’ and satire sites like ‘The Onion’ could be accused of illegal content since the legislation makes no distinction for such genres, according to the EFF,” CBS LA reported.

Chau has yet to explain how such a bill would be enforced, but considering Google’s headquarters are based California, I’m sure they will think of something.
